iPhone Security Tip 4: Web Browsing via Safari
Surfing the Internet via iPhone is full of security risks just like using the Web via laptop or desktop computers. Proactively optimizing your iPhone browser security settings could potentially mean the difference between a functioning device and an infected gadget rendered useless by malware.
The Safari browser security for the iPhone is very basic and most are turned on by default--but it doesn't hurt to ensure that your iPhone Safari security settings are on. Let's check the settings.

Go to your iPhone settings icon
Scroll down and tap the Safari icon
Scroll down to Block Pop-ups and make sure it is on
Next tap on the Accept Cookies
Select never to make your phone more secure
Next tap on Clear History then Clear History again
Next tap on Clear Cookies and Data, select Clear again.

The reason for blocking Pop-ups is that clicking on a malicious pop-up could expose your device to malware and lead to an infection.

Cookies
are pieces of text that are distributed back and forth between Web servers and Internet clients, typically browsers, and they're used mainly for authenticating users. However, cookies can be a security/privacy risk, as information about users' devices, operating systems, browsers and, in some cases, browsing habits can be stored within cookies and could, therefore, be accessed by third-parties.
The iPhone Safari Accept Cookies function is set to From Visited by default--meaning the browser will accept cookies from sites that you navigate to--but the most security conscious iPhone owners may want to disable cookies completely.

This is just a small measure to take to ensure you are browsing the web on your iPhone as securely as possible.

Next time I will give tips on securing the iPhone for young iPhone users.

Take care.

iPhone Security Tip 3: Securely Access Corporate and Web Mail Accounts
For the corporate iPhone user you are most likely accessing your e-mail, at least your business mail, through an exchange server through your organization. (For more on how to receive Outlook and Notes mail on the iPhone, consult your IT administrator.)
For iPhone users, receiving Web mail, like Gmail, AOL and Yahoo Mail, is a breeze; however, the process is not always secure--especially if you're not aware of how to ensure that secure sockets layer (SSL) protection is enabled, where available. SSL encrypts mail that's sent and received via iPhone. If you're unable to connect to your Web mail using the iPhone and SSL, consider using another mail account that does support the safeguard--I've setup a number of gmail, hotmail, and live accounts using SSL on the iPhone. Or, if you choose to access mail without SSL, be aware that your messages are not secured--think post card vs. sealed letter
.
To ensure that you're using SSL when retrieving Web mail, here are the steps:
Click iPhone Settings tab,
Choose Mail, Contacts and Calendar
Select one of your active mail accounts
Click Advanced
Scroll down to SSL option and ensure that it's set to On.
If you have more than one mail account you will need to do this step for each account. iPhone users can also access Web mail via their mail provider's portals, but it pays to be security smart when using this process as well. For instance, say you are using gmail.  You go to the google mail webpage through safari.  iPhone users should ensure that the URL for the mail provider's site (Google in this case) begins with HTTPS://WWW instead of just HTTP://WWW, which signifies that the connection is secured using SSL. A tiny lock also appears just to the right of URLs when iPhone users navigate to pages that use SSL for secure connections. Just be wary of logging into any Web site to check mail via iPhone that doesn't have HTTPS in its URL and a lock to the right of the Web address in your Safari browser.

These steps should help you ensure that your mail accounts are secure.

Until next time.......be secure.

iPhone Security Tip 2: Enable Passcode Lock

This continues our 2nd of 6 Tips for  iPhone security.
You have already experienced the iPhone Auto-Lock which is the sliding bar that is displayed on your device's screen after a preset time period of non-use, but the Passcode Lock feature takes that a step further. Whenever the device's display locks, whether due to Auto-Lock or because you've hit the iPhone Sleep button--found on the top right of the device--Passcode Lock requires a four-digit code to be entered before the device can be employed again.
To turn on Passcode Lock,
Click Settings icon
Click General
Tap Passcode Lock
Enable the function by tapping Turn Passcode On.
You'll then be prompted to enter in a new passcode.
NOTE: Strong passwords are completely random and should not be chosen based on birthdays or other dates or numbers that could be easily guessed by would-be hackers. It’s best to mix the password with numbers and letters.

You can also specify when a passcode is required. You can set to immediately upon using the device, after one, five, fifteen, one hour or four hours.
Tap Require Passcode Setting the passcode prompt to Immediately is the most secure, as users won't be able to access the iPhone at all without entering the appropriate passcode.

The Passcode Lock screen also has options to Show SMS Preview. When enabled, the SMS preview function allows the first sentence of new text messages to appear on-screen even when a passcode has not been entered. If you'd like the highest level of iPhone security--or just some more privacy--you probably want to disable Show SMS Preview.

The Erase Data function lets you completely wipe your iPhone after 10 failed passcode attempts. After six failed attempts, the iPhone locks out users for a minute before another passcode can be entered. And the device increases the lock-out time following each additional failed attempt--one minute, five minutes, 15 minutes, etc.--so an attempted passcode bypass could take miscreants hours. You really need to think about allowing your phone to be completely wiped. If you set your phone to the erase function just remember if you forget you password and keep guessing for 10 times you will wipe all the data on your phone.

The passcode lock is a good function to make your phone secure when you leave it unattended or your phone is lost.

iPhone Security Tip #1.... Are you an iPhone user putting your personal information at risk? LISTEN UP... Important iPhone Security Tip.

If you are using iPhone then security risk needs to be on your mind. If security's not on your mind, you're putting yourself at risk at having your web mail account hacked, your online identity stolen or losing valuable personal information, such as wireless service account data, that could result in financial losses, among other disasters.

iPhone Security Tip 1: Use Wi-Fi Safely on the iPhone
One of the iPhone's most valuable features is its Wi-Fi support, which lets you connect to high-speed wireless networks for faster Web browsing and better data coverage in spots where cellular coverage is less than stellar. However, employing Wi-Fi networks without taking the proper security precautions can leave your device--and everything on it--open to crafty hackers.
Did you know that you can unknowingly connect to Wi-Fi networks while on the go?  Yes, it happens all the time unless you enable the iPhone's “Ask to Join Networks” function. Here is how you turn this feature on.

Tap on your iPhones  “Settings app”.
Select “Wi-Fi
Turn the “Ask to Join Networks” function to ON by tapping.
Once this feature is enabled, you'll never connect to an open Wi-Fi network without first being asked to confirm the connection. (The device will still automatically connect to recognized networks, or networks to which you've connected in the past.)

You might also with to disable Wi-Fi whenever it's not in use. This reduces the chance of accidentally connecting to an unsecured or suspect network and saves iPhone battery life. To turn Wi-Fi off:

Select: Settings icon
Tap - WiFi
Click - On/Off button on the WiFi screen.

Ok. You have taken your first step to making your iPhone more secure. Good Job!!!

Protect Your Identity

Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

Protecting your identity begins by reducing the number of places where your personal information can be found. Follow these tips to reduce your risk:
  • Consider placing a free security freeze on your credit to block others, including identity thieves, from opening a new account or obtaining credit in your name.
  • You can opt-out of pre-screened credit offers for free online at http://www.optoutprescreen.com/.
  • Signing up for the state’s Do Not Call list also protects you from pre-screened credit offers and other types of telemarketing fraud.
  • You can opt out of major online tracking companies for free online at Network Advertising Initiative.
  • You may remove yourself from several mailing lists for up to five years by contacting the Direct Marketing Association, although a processing fee may apply for this service.
  • If your bank provides your account information to third parties, you may ask to opt-out of this practice or request they notify you in advance.
  • If you receive an offer for a pre-approved credit card or loan but aren't interested, shred the application form before throwing it away.
  • If you are not interested in receiving convenience checks by your credit card companies, you can request to be removed from the mailing list.
Reduce the number of credit cards you carry with you. Just carry the ones you need to use.

Everyone must take charge of protecting their own identities.  The online world is an ever changing place and takes constant awareness on a consumers part.  Remember "It's a jungle out there".

Come back soon for more info to keep you in the know.

iPad Printing information

Do you want to be able to print from your iPad?   One option is to purchase a printing app. There are many that are available. After researching the available app’s I decided on PrintCentral made by EuroSmartz. The cost of $9.99 is reasonable when you consider all the features.  You can print

If you are interested in this option I have outlined below the steps to setting up your printer.

1. Purchase the app through the iPad app store.
2. Open app
3. Tap print button
4. Select your printer
5. Print

If you printer does not appear you may have to do additional steps (which is what I had to do).
You will need to use WePrint free software on your PC or Mac. Go here to download. http://mobile.eurosmartz.com/downloads.html

With WePrint you will not need to touch or be near your computer to print, you simply tap print on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch and the computer will act as a relay and automatically pass the print job from your device onto your printer with out user intervention.

Installing WePrint on your Mac or PC will also give you the ability to print via 3G/EDGE, so even when you are out of your office/home you can quickly and easily send print jobs to your printer from your iPad, iPhone or Pod Touch.

Once you have WePrint on your PC, open the WePrint software and select Printing over 3G. Select “Settings”, click on Remote printing via an Email/WebDAV server. Enter your email address and password then select the test button. You should get a green check mark.  Plug in the iPad.

You can use a proxy such as email to send your print request to the printer.
1. Open the app.
2. Go to the Top Right-Hand side of app page and select the printer icon and a box will open.
3. Select the choose button and enter the information for email proxy (must have a google or gmail account. If you don’t it only takes a few minutes to set up.
4. Once you have your gmail information entered you will test and if all is good you are ready to choose your printer.
5. Once printer is chosen you are ready to test print.

My printing worked great after the set up. If you have questions, email me and I will try to help you.

Tis' The Season For Scammers - Tip #1
11/30/2010 1:29:52 PM
BEWARE – Watch out for Shoulder Surfing, Fake PIN Pads, and Even Fake Machines

Tip # 1
With the Holiday Season comes a rise in scams and theivery. Over the next few days we will be posting a few tips to hopefully, help you avoid any of these scams.
  • Following are ways a thieve may gather your ATM PIN number or Card Information. One way thieves get your ATM PIN number is to mount a wireless video camera inside the ATM area. It will be hard to detect. They may be attached to the machine like a pamphlet holder or something else designed to look like part of the ATM machine.  When keying in your pin cover your hand so that the keys you are pressing are not visible. Once the scammers have your number, magnetic strips are easy to make and thieves are able to easily reproduce ATM cards.

  • In addition thieves have designed fake PIN pads that are placed on top of the original ATM PIN pad.  Look at your PIN pad surface. If any thing looks out of place don’t use it. With the  fake PIN pads, your ATM transaction will process normally and you won't know a scammer has stolen anything until it's too late.

  • Thieves also occasionally put up fake ATM machines in and around shopping centers and other public locations. Upon placing your card into the card reader, these machines collect your ATM PIN and account information. They do not dispense cash. Rather, a screen comes up that says that the machine is out of money or out of order.  Try going to your ATM before leaving town for shopping or a bank ATM that you know has been there long term.
Check back tomorrow for Tip No. 2......

Until then be smart and safe.
